South

South is more than the average sports bar. Less than a year ago, four friends decided to open their dream hang out spot, a dream come true also for all beer aficionados and sports fans. As an added bonus, South serves good food and, later at night, you can rock out to the DJ’s rock n’ roll tunes.

Television screens are available throughout the lounge, which allow the viewing of several different sports games at once. After dinner, the lounge becomes a dance floor with a DJ spinning requests. As for the food, this sports bar offers a unique menu with Southern flavors as implied by the lounge’s name.

There is a generous beer menu, including an ample draft sampling and some exotic bottled beers. The bar also serves Southern specialties like the Mint Julep cocktail and a few mean mixes that will put you in the zone quickly with a little Southern Comfort or peach Schnapps.

The menu includes favorites such as gumbo, muddy shrimp, fried chicken, fried green tomatoes and hushpuppies. For sports fans there is no shortage of munchies; the appetizers are endless. Traditional burgers and sandwiches are available with the regional variation; the Po’ Boy’s, made with catfish and oysters, are for the more adventurous.

Nothing subtle about it, this is Southern, boasting dishes from Georgia to Louisiana. The Texas-style barbecued ribs are so tender the meat falls right off the bone and they are served with a complex brew of baked beans and pile of collard greens. The muddy shrimp sauce has an elaborate, full palette of flavors, served with a side of fresh bread to soak it up. A Jambalaya with andouille sausage and crawfish etouffee is authentic, mildly spicy and pleasant. For dessert, try a southern favorite, the beignets, a light fluffy deep-fried pastry dusted with confectioner’s sugar. But most sensational was Miss Gloria’s Bourbon Pecan Pie, with enough bourbon to make those Georgia peaches blush!
