Venice Family Clinic’s HEART Gala Raises $2.7 Million, Honors Morleigh Steinberg and U2’s The Edge

Star-Studded Event Blends Health and Art to Raise Money

Artists, philanthropists, and celebrities came together last night for the Venice Family Clinic’s Inaugural HEART (Health + Art) Gala at 3Labs in Culver City, CA. Hosted by comedian Matt Friend, the event honored longtime Venice Family Clinic supporters Morleigh Steinberg and U2’s The Edge with the first-ever HEART Award. The star-studded evening raised $2.7 million and counting to support the innovative health services and programs provided by the Clinic to more than 45,000 people in need in Los Angeles County, regardless of their income, insurance, or immigration status.

Oscar-winning actress Anjelica Huston took the stage to reminisce about Venice Family Clinic’s Art Walk + Auction, recalling the origins of the event in 1979 when the Clinic faced closure due to financial struggles. Huston highlighted the pivotal role played by visionary women and members of the Venice arts community, including renowned artists like Frank Gehry, Lita Albuquerque, and Larry Bell, in keeping the Clinic doors open. The HEART Gala continues this tradition, honoring those who contribute to the Clinic’s vital health care services.

Matt Friend, in his role as host, delivered a humorous opening monologue featuring his famous impressions of former President Donald Trump and Senator Mitch McConnell.

Mitesh Popat, CEO of Venice Family Clinic, welcomed guests and expressed gratitude for their support of “the HEART of LA.” The Clinic’s newly launched HEART (Health + Art) Initiative aims to blend creativity and compassion to provide access to quality health care for all.

Artist Morleigh Steinberg and U2’s The Edge graciously accepted the HEART Award, presented to them by longtime friend and activist Bobby Shriver. The award, designed by artist Sachi Moskowitz, symbolizes the intersection of health and art. The Edge expressed his and Steinberg’s appreciation for the honor, emphasizing their belief in the power of community and access to healthcare for all.

Eight-time GRAMMY-Award-winning artist Beck energized the crowd with a lively performance of his hit songs, joined later by The Edge and Morleigh’s son, Levi Evans, for a tribute performance. The evening also featured an art installation by designer and illustrator Joanna Todaro, as well as an auction of unique items and exclusive experiences, with all proceeds benefiting Venice Family Clinic’s programs and services.

The inaugural Venice Family Clinic HEART Gala was supported by Lead Sponsor Live Nation and Foundational Sponsors The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation, UCLA Health, and the David Geffen School of Medicine.
