Building your Home in Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach is one of the most beautiful places in the world. There is no doubt about that. It is known to many as paradise, with some of the best beaches out there. It is a world-renowned tourist destination. If you choose to build your home here, there are plenty of things you need to consider. Just because it is one of the most beautiful places doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think thoroughly about your options and decisions. When you are thinking about laying down your roots in some of the most sought after places in the world, there are a few steps to consider.

Can I Afford Building a House in Laguna?

The first thing you should think about when considering moving to Laguna Beach is if you can afford it. You must do some decent research about how much it costs to buy a house or piece of land. When you are thinking of building a house on some of the precious piece of Laguna Beach, it will cost you a lot of money. You will need to be in a position where you have nearly a disposable income. Whatever amount of money you think you need to build a home in Laguna, you should expect that you’ll need more than that. Luckily there are some home-building calculators to help you determine how much you will need. However, there are more factors than just money.

Construction Standards

Another thing you need to think about when it comes to building in Laguna Beach is to keep in mind that you need to adhere to OSHA construction standards. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards are pivotal in Laguna Beach because many homes are built on cliffs that erode over time and need to be maintained. When you are thinking of building a house in Laguna Beach, it is so important to think about the future. The oceans will rise, so if you are young and want to live in this house for decades you should consider not building it on the water. While that is the most enticing option for building a home in Laguna Beach, the beach is never far away.

Location, Location, Location

When you are building a home in Laguna Beach, location is integral. Not only should you think about the cost of a particular location, you should think about how that location will change over time. Certain areas of the city will go up in price and others will be difficult to maintain when it comes to the rising oceans. When you are investing in any kind of property, thinking about the future is key. While it is so important to consider location, every location in Laguna Beach will continue to be worth a decent amount of money. It is important to consider how you will invest your money over time. Location will only enhance your investments.

Find an Architect

Once you have decided you are going to go for it, it is time to hire an architect. Talking to an architect will help you put the process into reality. They may kill some of your dreams, but they will also show you what is possible. Consulting an architect before you start the process will ensure that it will go smoothly.

Getting a Permit

After you have considered the costs, construction standards, location, and how things will change in the future, you can start the process of getting a permit. It is not a simple process, but it is a rewarding experience for someone looking to build a life in Laguna Beach. First, you should set-up a site meeting before the application. Typically this is held with the architect and the client. You will review all development standards that are associated with the land. Preliminary sketches can sometimes be helpful to communicate your intentions.

Then you will develop your zoning submittal set, where your illustrations will be proposed with a specific set of requirements. Once your drawings are accepted, you will be able to stake the property, send out notices to neighbors, and hold meetings with them. Finally you will get through the design review, complete construction documents, and the Blue List.

Building a home isn’t easy anywhere, especially in Laguna Beach. But if you have the money and do the proper planning, you can carve out your own place in paradise. Due diligence and you will create a happy life near the beach.
