A man who pulled a revolver from his waistband was shot to death by a sheriff’s deputy in unincorporated Florence, authorities said today.
The shooting followed an investigation into the shooting of another man, said Deputy Lisa Jansen of the Sheriff’s Investigation Bureau.
Deputies from the Sheriff’s Century Station responded at 5:48 p.m. to reports of a gunshot victim near the intersection of East 83rd and Beach streets. While deputies were attending to the victim, other deputies attempted to detain three possible suspects at the scene, Jansen said.
One of the suspects ran down an alley and was immediately followed by two deputies who soon caught up to him, Jensen said, adding that the suspect turned toward one of them and withdrew a revolver from his waistband, triggering the deputy-involved shooting.
The suspect was struck by gunfire in the upper body and transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Jansen said.
The suspect’s loaded revolver was recovered at the scene, she said. No deputy was hurt.
The original gunshot victim is listed in serious but fair condition at a local hospital, according to Jansen.
