U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today sent a letter to Warner Brothers Pictures praising their recent announcement that veteran producer Denise Di Novi will direct the upcoming thriller, Unforgettable. The studio also selected Patty Jenkins to direct another major film,Wonder Woman.
In May, Boxer and four other women Senators sent a letter to all the major Hollywood studios asking them to respond to a USC study that found that only 4.1 percent of top-grossing films were directed by women in the last decade.
The Senator has been encouraged by recent reports of films that will have a woman behind the camera, including Disney’s Queen of Katwe and a sequel to Frozen, four films by Universal this year includingSuffragette and By the Sea, and a new film on the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg starring Natalie Portman.
The Senator wrote, “While I am encouraged by recent news reports that some major upcoming films will be directed by women, it is clear that much more must be done to ensure that the many exceptional women in this industry get a fair shot in the director’s chair.”
Senator Boxer will be following up with all the studios in the weeks ahead.
