A number of Beverly Hills residents have been robbed by imposters claiming to be collecting money for the IRS, utilities and law enforcement agencies, police said Tuesday.
The suspects “cold call” residents, telling them they are behind in their taxes or water bills or a family member is in jail and needs bail money and demanding immediate payment whether in the form of pre-paid debit cards or wire transfers.
The scammers often have the last four numbers of the victim’s social security card, which helps them to convince people to pay up.
A recent influx of reports suggest that Beverly Hills is being targeted by the scammers, police said.
Anyone who has received this type of call or has been victimized was asked to call the Beverly Hills Police Department at (310) 550-4951.
