Orange County authorities confirmed on May 29 that a 21-year-old Mission Viejo man shot and killed his parents and 15-year-old sister in the family’s home, then turned the shotgun on himself, over Memorial Day weekend.
Michael Scheer killed his parents – Mark, 55, and Lydia, 54 – and sister Amy before killing himself, but detectives have yet to determine a motive, Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jeff Hallock said.
Ownership of the gun was also not immediately clear.
The bodies were found in the family’s two-story home in the 25600 block of Pacific Hills Drive about 9 a.m. on May 27 after a relative called 911, but the shootings apparently occurred early on May 26 when a neighbor reported hearing gunshots. Deputies had checked out the area about 3 a.m. but left after finding no obvious problems.
Friends from Mount of Olives Lutheran Church described the family as happy and said they had detected no outward signs of trouble.
Michael Scheer had no criminal record, according to published reports.
