It was a perfect way to beat the summer heat; fishing with your dog off the Franks Tract State Recreation Area, southeast of Brannan Island between False River and Bethel Island. Sadly this Rockwell-esque summer day turned tragic when Cocoa jumped off their boat. Naturally, Paul DiDonato jumped in to the water after his pup, the chocolate Cocker Spaniel, but alas the current was too strong and he had to get back in the boat or risk drowning.
My family and I have wept buckets over four legged family members who have died. So, when Danielle DiDonato contacted me about her family’s three-ish year old dog, I had to write this even though the Franks Tract State Recreation is just outside of Oakley. Paul never saw Cocoa go under the waves and thus giving the family a bit of hope. “She was wearing a tag but we just want as many eyes out there as possible,†said Danielle DiDonato.
