Brentwood Beat

I recently attended a community garage sale held over in Brentwood Glen (see photos, page 19 of our print edition). I heard something like 40 houses participated.

I zoomed by to snap a few photos but ended up walking the neighborhood, buying a few things here and there. It was all very pleasant.

I think this is something every Brentwood neighborhood should consider doing. If a bunch of folks in a neighborhood conduct a garage sale all on the same day, a bigger crowd comes, more stuff gets sold, everyone has fun.

I got a few suggestions to my query last month for an alternative name to “Green Hollow Square,†the Charlie Munger project on San Vicente. I didn’t receive that many alternatives, but everywhere I went this last month, everyone told me they agreed “Green Hollow Square†was a perfectly awful name.

To see the suggestions that did come in, you have to keep reading this column till the end. I’ll keep you in suspense for now.

Michael Feuer and Bill Rosendahl were featured speakers at the recently-conducted meeting of South Brentwood Residents Association (SBRA). See page 13 of our print edition for more on this event.

Michael Feuer is getting “termed out†at the end of his current term as our state legislator. It’s too bad term limits cause political leaders to do this constant job-hopping dance.

It’s not yet clear what Michael’s next move will be. It would be a shame to lose this very bright light during this current season of political darkness. Michael has a true gift for taking topics that are mind-numbingly arcane and complicated – and then making them seem easy and straightforward. We need more of that these days.

Speaking of mind-numbing, every ten years, as a result of the census, political boundaries are redrawn to reflect relative shifts in population. This process is called redistricting, which often results in “gerrymandering.â€
This time it’s supposed to be different because of an initiative passed by California voters that established something of a “blue ribbon panel,†which includes several non-politically connected citizens, to redraw (and realign) the boundaries.

This is a very dry and complicated subject, but it’s important. I asked Larry Watts of Sullivan Canyon (and a Brentwood stalwart who currently serves on the BCC) to explain redistricting – and what it means to Brentwood – to our readers. See his guest editorial on page 24-25 of our print edition. Thank you, Larry.

A guest editorial from the ACLU, which is claiming the VA isn’t adhering to the intent of the original deed that calls a “permanent home†for disabled veterans, appears on page 26 of our print edition. If the ACLU takes legal action, and it’s successful, life as we know it at the VA will change dramatically.

We have been delighted by the support we’ve received from our “Brentwood Boosters,†who have made contributions during this past year that have helped make the Brentwood News possible.

We’ll be hosting, along with Republic Bank (where Blockbuster used to be, on San Vicente), a Brentwood Boosters Club gathering this month. If you’d like to attend, please become a booster (see page 22 of our print edition).

Reader Alternatives to the Name, “Green Hollow Squareâ€

In the last issue of the Brentwood News, I suggested “Brentwood Commons†as a better name for the project being proposed where Duttons Bookstore used to be.
Someone I sat next to at the South Brentwood Residents Association Annual Meeting, whose name I didn’t get, suggested “Paseo San Vicente†or “Paseo Vicente.â€

Here is some other input from our readers:

How about “Irvine Corporate Center, Brentwood Branch†? Or better still, “The Dull, Boring, Unimaginative Common-Place.†I believe that this design was forced on Ray Keller by Mr. Munger’s people. What a missed opportunity to truly create a “commons.â€
James A. Rothstein

I suggest Brentwood Atrium (or The Atrium in (at) Brentwood)
If you really want to try erudition, go for The Agora (The Brentwood Agora)
Dr. Albert Sonnenfeld

Just to let you know, as a longtime Brentwood resident — I too agree — this name is TERRIBLE — the community should do everything possible to change the name and perhaps as suggested the terrible name is a distraction to actual more significant issues that would affect our community with the build out of the property.
Marcia Young

How about Vicente Square
or Vicente Place or Plaza Vicente?
