Culver City’s July 4 Fireworks to be at West L.A. College

Nothing can stop a really good fireworks show, not even construction. So while major renovations Culver City High School’s athletic fields caused the Exchange Club’s to not stage its annual fireworks show at the academic institution last year, the municipality’s leaders unanimously supported sponsoring the organization’s July 4 program this summer at West Los Angeles College (WLAC).

While the community college is technically not within Culver City’s boundaries, the City Council voted April 21 to direct $24,000 in direct financial assistance and City staff time to the Exchange Club.

The Exchange Club has held a one-day fireworks show fundraiser at Culver City High School annually for almost 50 years, according to report presented to Culver City’s council members on April 21.

Funds previously raised at the annual fireworks show has helped the Exchange Club fund local charities, support child abuse preventions efforts, financially support the Culver City Unified School District, and provide annual scholarships, according to the council report.

WLAC is not located within any incorporated city limits, meaning Culver City would have to coordinate the July 4 fireworks show on the college campus with the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s departments.

This will be the 48th annual July 4 fireworks show for the Exchange Club.

The fireworks show at Culver City High School is often listed as one of the best July 4 events to attend within Los Angeles County, with some blogs and local television networks regularly recommending viewers to attend The Exchange Club’s program.

WLAC is located at 9000 Overland Avenue.

It was not determined whether The Exchange Club’s July 4 fireworks fundraiser would return to Culver City High school once the athletic field renovations are completed.
