The burglary suspect who was fatally wounded in an officer-involved shooting in South Los Angeles was identified Tuesday by authorities.
No officers were injured in the shooting, which was reported just after 1 p.m. Monday near Maple Avenue and 27th Street, according to Officer Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.
The suspect, identified by the county coroner’s office as 23-year-old Pablo Renato Cartagena of Los Angeles, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the LAPD.
Officers from the LAPD’s Metro Division were on a crime suppression detail in the area when they saw what they believe was a car being burglarized, police said.
They pursued the suspect on foot and that’s when one officer fired at the suspect, who was struck and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the LAPD. Police did not immediately disclose what prompted the officer to fire at the suspect.
“A handgun was recovered at the scene, which investigators believe belonged to the suspect,” according to a police statement.
