UC Irvine and UCLA ranked second and 10th, respectively, out of nearly 1,200 colleges and universities in rankings of employment outcomes relative to the total cost of a higher education.

The nonprofit Educate to Career Inc. compiled the rankings based on criteria like the percentage of graduates employed in occupations that match their field of study, the average salary earned by recent graduates and percentage of people employed within one year of graduation.

The number of years it takes to graduate, the net cost of in-state tuition and loan default rates were also considered.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranked first on the ETC list.

California State University campuses in the Southland made the list: Cal State Los Angeles (17th), Cal State Dominguez Hills (85), Cal State Long Beach (205), Cal State Northridge (255) and Cal State Fullerton (474).
