A small, shallow 3.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded today in the Gulf of Santa Catalina, according to a computer-generated report from the U.S. Geological Survey.
The temblor struck at 2:09 a.m. at the surface of the ocean floor, its epicenter 13 miles east-northeast of Avalon and 17 miles southwest of Newport Beach, according to the report, which was not immediately reviewed by a seismologist.
