At a candidate forum meeting on Feb. 21, CD5 Councilmember Paul Koretz called for a ban on bicycles on Westwood Boulevard.
Bike lanes on Westwood Boulevard were originally introduced as part of Mobility Plan 2035, which was announced in 2013. However, in September 2016, Los Angeles City Council voted to move the bike lanes to Gayley Avenue instead.
At the Feb. 21 forum, incumbent Koretz said even if he saw a study that told him it would be safe to cycle on Westwood Boulevard, “intuitively I see there isn’t enough space for two buses to pass each other in two lanes and cram the bike lanes, and have 25,000 cars a day. It’s just going to be too dangerous.”
Koretz said he would try and have the bicycle lanes as quickly as possible at Gayley Ave., and “discourage bicycle traffic on Westwood Blvd., in fact maybe ban it, so we can keep every cyclist safe.”
