Justin Bieber was the big winner tonight at the 2016 American Music Awards staged at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles, finishing a step ahead of Rihanna and Drake.
Bieber gathered four awards, including Video of the Year, for the song “Sorry.” Drake and Rihanna won three each, including their collaboration on the song, “Work.”
Drake originally earned 13 nominations, but early voting eliminated him as a contender for Artist of the Year. His 13 nominations marked the largest number since Michael Jackson got 11 in 1984.
Supermodel Gigi Hadid and comedian Jay Pharoah hosted the ceremony, which featured performances from artists such as Fifth Harmony, Lady Gaga, Green Day, Bruno Mars, Grande, Nicki Minaj, Maroon 5 and Kendrick Lamar.
“Police” frontman Sting received The American Music Award of Merit.
The ceremony was televised on ABC.
