Fans of David Bowie placed flowers and candles on his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame overnight in tribute to the English rock star, who died Sunday at the age of 69.
Bowie died after a battle with cancer, his representatives reported. He received his star, which is in the 7000 block of Hollywood Boulevard, in 1997.
“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer,” read a statement posted on the artist’s official social media accounts. “While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”
The influential London-born singer-songwriter and producer excelled at glam rock, art rock, soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronica during his eclectic 40-plus-year career.
Bowie released his 25th album, Blackstar, on Friday, which was his birthday.
Survivors include his wife, the model Iman, whom he married in 1992; his son, director Duncan Jones; and daughter Alexandria.
