Mayor Eric Garcetti, who travelled to France to campaign for the landmark Paris Climate Agreement, said Saturday’s agreement is meaningful but means work ahead for Los Angeles.
Speaking with 34 other members of the ad hoc “Mayors National Climate Action Agenda,” Garcetti hailed the Paris accord as success “in the difficult task of creating and adopting a deal that represents historic and meaningful progress to combat climate change.”
Garcetti and the others issued a statement vowing “we will redouble our efforts to protect our communities form diminishing air quality, flooding, fire, extreme weather, famine, drought, economic downturn and other profound risks posed by climate change.”
The joint statement pledged that mayors would “push back against Congress’ shortsighted efforts to reverse course” on President Barack Obama’s actions to reduce carbon emissions in the United States.
