Cinco De Mayo In Mandeville Canyon

Upper Mandeville Canyon Association held its annual Cinco de Mayo party Sunday afternoon, May 3, at the northern end of the canyon. The weather was perfect. It was a fun party for residents of Mandeville Canyon.

In addition to a great Mexican menu which was freshly prepared, the bar complimented the menu with the usual refreshments and, of course, margaritas, followed by a great variety of tasty desserts. The party atmosphere was enhanced by a wonderful Blue Grass band.

For the kids, and adults, there was a mini-zoo that was a huge hit. It included a giant tortoise, huge bullfrog, an iguana, beautiful boa snakes and miscellaneous giant insects. There was also a collection of puppies with which the kids were allowed to interact. There were varieties of bounce houses which the kids loved. Our Councilman, Mike Bonin, and his chief counsel, Norman Kulla, joined the festivities. Schedule permitting, they always try to support Homeowner Association events. Also, Battalion Chief McKnight from LAFD attended.

Brentwood Residents Trained For Emergencies

The Brentwood Community Council (BCC) sponsored a community emergency response training (CERT) course at Paul Revere Middle School for the Brentwood and adjacent communities. CERT consists of a series of seven classes, offered once a week for seven weeks. CERT is taught by the LAFD.

Instructor, Firefighter Susan Jensen, presented important information dealing with fires, earthquakes, floods, evacuations, terrorism, search/rescue, medical/psychological issues, food/water storage, and what equipment and supplies to store.

Jensen’s classes were not only informative and interesting, but her great sense of humor made the course fun. The course had a good turn out due to the publicity from Brentwood News, BCC’s e-mail blast, Home Owner Association e-blasts, and community website Next Door (@Mandeville).

To qualify for a CERT diploma, LAFD requires a minimum of 25 students. There were 48 students registered, but those who missed a class will be able to make up the class at any location in L.A. where such classes are offered. The BCC sponsored series ended April 16.

A graduation certificate was presented to each participant for completing all classes. In addition, the students received a CERT backpack filled with appropriate tools (gas shut-off wrench, crow bar), helmet, masks, gloves, flashlight, etc.

The class photo below did not include all the students. Now, it’s time for the many HOAs in Brentwood to organize “their” respective, certified residents so that they can be coordinated and more useful in an emergency.
