A pedestrian was struck and killed today by an on- duty LAPD Bomb Squad officer in an official vehicle in the Del Rey area of West Los Angeles, authorities said.
The accident occurred in the 13600 block of Culver Boulevard at 12:11 a.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.
The man, who was in his 50s, died at the scene, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. His name was withheld, pending family notification.
“It has been extremely foggy,” said Sgt. Elizabeth Ellis of the LAPD’s West Traffic Division, adding the fog could have been a factor in the accident.
LAPD Media Relations Officer Norma Eisenman confirmed a Bomb Squad unit struck the pedestrian and the officer involved was on duty. But there was no immediate word on where he was headed.
