Los Angeles police are seeking a search warrant for phone records they hope will help them recover the Heisman Trophy stolen from USC’s Heritage Hall along with O.J. Simpson’s No. 32 jersey.
The 1994 case was revived in November when a man called USC, said he purchased the trophy from a friend and wanted to authenticate it, according to TMZ.com, which reported that university officials determined he did have the trophy.
Detectives want to check out his story, but they need a warrant to track the man down through phone records.
Heisman trophies come in pairs — one for the school and one for the player. Simpson’s was sold for about $255,500 to partially satisfy the $33 million wrongful death judgment against him.
The whereabouts of Simpson’s No. 32 jersey, taken from a display case in the same break-in, is unknown.
