With heavy rain increasing the probability of mudslides and debris flows, county fire officials today warned Angelenos against underestimating the power of moving water and offered safety tips for those who might become trapped.
Authorities urged residents to stay away from flood control channels, canyons, natural waterways and other areas vulnerable to flooding.
Some other cautions offered by the Los Angeles County Fire Department:
— do not attempt to cross flooded areas and never enter moving water on foot or in a vehicle;
— if trapped in a car by flooding, stay in the vehicle if possible or wait on the top of the car for assistance, if necessary;
— if trapped on foot, seek the highest ground available and wait for help; and
— do not attempt to rescue someone else swept into moving water by heading into the water. Instead call 911 and, if possible, throw out a rope or floatation device.
Officials called on residents in post-burn areas to prepare an evacuation kit with valuables, medications and tools such as a radio and a flashlight and be ready to leave immediately if an evacuation is ordered.
In addition to coordinating an emergency plan with family members and mapping out alternate routes for evacuation, residents in vulnerable areas should stock three days worth of food and water.
Sandbags are available at local fire stations.
