A 19-year-old man was killed Sunday when he jumped on the hood of his carjacked car and was thrown off when the suspect crashed into a Boyle Heights business, police said.
The victim died at the scene of the crash, which happened about 3:50 p.m. at 3544 E. Olympic Boulevard, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
His name was not immediately released by authorities, but family members identified him to reporters at the scene as 19-year-old Oscar Perez.
The suspect was seriously injured and taken to a hospital pending booking, Los Angeles police Sgt. Dave Rich said.
The crashed car caught fire, but the damage to the building from the impact and fire was minimal, Humphrey said.
Rich said that prior to the crash, the car had been involved in a two-vehicle collision, after which the two drivers got into a physical fight.
The suspect carjacked the victim’s vehicle, prompting the victim to jump on the hood, only to be thrown off and fatally injured in the crash into the building, he said.
Another crime scene was marked by yellow police tape at the intersection of Pico Boulevard and Vista Grande Avenue, a news videographer said.
Homicide detectives from the LAPD’s Hollenbeck Station were handling the investigation, Rich said.
