Forecasters warn against wildfire weather in parts of Los Angeles County

Mountain and valley areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties remained under a red flag warning today, as did Orange County, with forecasters saying strong winds and low humidity threaten to give rise to wildfires.

The warning is scheduled to remain in force until 4 this afternoon in the San Gabriel and Santa Monica mountains and the Angeles National Forest in Los Angeles County, as well as Orange County, the mountains of Ventura County and that county’s Los Padres National Forest.

NWS forecasters predicted that the areas under warning would be swept by northeast winds blowing at sustained speeds of between 15 and 25 miles per hour and gusting at 40 mph while humidity levels remain at between 3 and 8 percent.

But the red flag warning was allowed to expire at 8 p.m. Monday in coastal areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The Los Angeles coastal zone contains beach cities, the Hollywood Hills, and metropolitan L.A., including downtown.

The NWS forecast partly cloudy skies today and highs of 64 in Lancaster; 65 in Palmdale; 67 on Mount Wilson; 70 in San Clemente; 72 in Avalon and Laguna Beach; 74 in Newport Beach and Saugus; 77 at LAX and in Mission Viejo; 78 in Pasadena and San Gabriel; 79 in Yorba Linda, Irvine, Burbank, Long Beach and downtown L.A.; 80 in Fullerton and Anaheim; and 81 in Woodland Hills.

Wednesday’s highs will be a few degrees lower and Thursday’s will be lower still — dipping into the 60s.
