Attendance at the three-week Los Angeles County Fair dipped from last year, organizers said today, and fair officials pointed to the elimination of a $1 entry promotion during opening weekend and the Southland heat wave for contributing to the drop.
Attendance at the 23-day fair that ended Sunday was 1,204,911, down from 1,438,514 in 2013, according to the fair.
Fair organizers noted that evening attractions helped drive attendance, most notably a Luminasia Chinese lantern festival and an all-aged entertainment and music club.
“We saw a significant trend toward visiting the fair once the sun went down,” Los Angeles County Fair Association President/CEO Jim Henwood said. “Sure, we had some warm weather, but our evening programming was so strong and
exciting, and unique in the case of Luminasia, that people wanted to be out after dark and we had the best place for them to be.”
Fair officials said the event broke evening and weekday attendance records over the last week, when the heat wave finally dissipated.
