Katelyn Rowland, who also plays for UCLA, made two saves for her second consecutive shutout as the U.S. defeated China, 3-0, today in Moncton, New Brunswick, in its final game of group play in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The U.S. finished second in the four-team Group B with a 2-1 record and will play the Group A champion in a quarterfinal Saturday in Toronto.
Lindsey Horan scored in the 19th and 38th minutes for the U.S. and assisted on Rose Lavelle’s goal in the 49th minute.
The U.S. led 20-5 in shots and 13-2 in shots on goal.
“Today, defensively, it was our best game,” said Rowland, who made eight saves in a 1-0 victory over Brazil Friday and 10 in a 2-0 loss to Germany last Tuesday, both in Edmonton, Alberta.
“We were organized and compact. We really tried to focus defensively. We really came out and shut them down.”
