“Lucy” won the herculean battle of the Hollywood box office this past weekend, decisively acing out “Hercules.”
“Lucy” debuted with a $44 million gate this weekend, edging out “Hercules” and its $29 million premiere, according to studio estimates gathered by industry analysts at Rentrak.
In its third week of exhibition, “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes” was in third place, with $16.4 million in weekend sales estimated. About $172.1 million has been taken in domestically for that franchise reboot.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the U.S. and Canada this weekend were “The Purge: Anarchy” ($9.8 million), “Planes: Fire and Rescue” ($9.3 million), “Sex Tape” ($6 million), “Transformers: Age Of Distinction” ($4.6 million), “And So It Goes” (debuting at $4.6 million), “Tammy” ($3.4 million) and “A Most Wanted Man” ($2.7 million).
