The Southland once again will be gripped by high heat today, and forecasters warned it would last until the middle of next week, along with an elevated risk of wildfire.
Today’s temperatures will be slightly lower than Thursday’s, according to the National Weather Service.
The NWS forecast highs today of 73 in San Clemente; 76 in Avalon and Newport Beach; 79 in Laguna Beach and at LAX; 82 in Long Beach; 85 in downtown L.A.; 86 in Anaheim and on Mount Wilson; 87 in Fullerton, Mission Viejo and Irvine; 89 in Yorba Linda; 91 in San Gabriel and Burbank; 93 in Pasadena; 98 in Woodland Hills and Saugus; 101 in Lancaster; and 102 in Palmdale.
“…The combination of gusty onshore winds, very warm temperatures and low humidities will bring elevated fire danger each afternoon and evening across interior sections” of the region until the middle of next week, according to an NWS statement.
Forecasters urged area residents to drink plenty of fluids, wear light clothing, check on neighbors — especially the elderly — and never leave children, senior citizens or pets in an enclosed car since interior temperatures can quickly become deadly. The heat is blamed on a strong upper-level high-pressure system.
Also in today’s forecast were possible morning thunderstorms in coastal waters from San Mateo point to the Mexican border. Any thunderstorms will be accompanied by little or no rainfall, forecasters said.
