The triple threat of a horror film, an animated family adventure and a raunchy comedy failed to defeat talking apes at the box office, as “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” remained the most popular draw at North American theaters, according to final figures released today.
“Apes” pulled in $36.2 million between Friday and Sunday to retain the top spot and give it a two-week haul of $139.2 million, according to box-office tracker Rentrak.
“The Purge: Anarchy” debuted in second place with $29.8 million, while the animated comedy “Planes: Fire and Rescue” took third with $17.5 million. The comedy “Sex Tape” debuted in fourth place with $14.6 million.
“Transformers: Age of Extinction” earned $9.8 million to push its four-week domestic gross to $227 million.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were `”Tammy” ($7.4 million); “22 Jump Street” ($4.7 million); “How to Train Your Dragon 2” ($3.9 million); “Earth to Echo” ($3.3 million); and “Maleficent” ($3.2 million).
