UPDATE: 9:45 P.M. – A man in his 20s was killed on June 5 in a shooting in the Silver Lake area that stemmed from an argument with a teenage suspect at a middle school graduation ceremony, authorities said.

The shooting occurred shortly before 11 a.m. outside a fast-food restaurant in the 4300 block of West Sunset Boulevard, near Fountain Avenue, and prompted an hour-long lock down of nearby Thomas Starr King Middle School, according to the Los Angeles Police Dept. (LAPD).

The victim, who was shot five times in the upper body, was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.

He was the older brother of a student graduating from the middle school at 4201 Fountain Avenue, said Monica Carazo of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

The suspect, a 16- or 17-year-old boy, fled the scene in a black car and remained at large late this afternoon, said LAPD Officer Nuria Vanegas. It was unclear if he had a connection to one of the graduates.

The suspect and victim argued at the school and the fight spilled into the street, culminating with gunfire outside a Del Taco restaurant, investigators said.

School officials at the graduation did not find out about the altercation until after the ceremony was over, Carazo said.

UPDATE: 1:11 P.M. – A man was killed today in an apparent gang-related shooting in the Silver Lake area, prompting the lockdown of a nearby middle school for about an hour, authorities said.

The shooting occurred shortly before 11 a.m. at Sunset Boulevard and Fountain Avenue, said Los Angeles Police Dept. (LAPD) officer Sally Madera of the Media Relations office.

The 30-something victim, who was reportedly shot in the chest, was pronounced dead at a hospital. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

Thomas Starr King Middle School, at 4201 Fountain Ave., was on lockdown until shortly after noon. The shooter, who fled in a black car, remained at large, said LAPD Officer Bruce Borihanh.
