The race for to fill Henry Waxman’s congressional seat in 2015 became a little more crowded last week, as former Los Angeles councilwoman and mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel reportedly announced her candidacy for Congress’s 33rd District.
Many had reportedly believed Greuel would run for Zev Yaroslavky’s soon-to-be open seat on the L.A. County Board of Supervisors. However, she announced earlier this year she would not challenge Bobby Shriver, Sheila Kuehl and others for the supervisorial seat.
Greuel, who challenged Eric Garcetti in 2013’s Los Angeles mayoral race, joins a list of other potential candidates to fill a seat that has been occupied for 40 years, including State Sen. Ted Lieu, Assemblyman Richard Bloom, Secretary of State Debra Bowen, and independents Bill Bloomfield and Marianne Williamson.
Prior to running for mayor, Greuel had served as a councilwoman and city controller for Los Angeles.
Waxman, 74, was first elected to Congress in 1974. After redistricting in 2012, Waxman represented the 33rd District in Washington, D.C. The district includes Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, and portions of West Los Angeles, among other locales.
