The Metro board awarded an $82 million contract today that will almost double the number of contract security officers on its rail system.
The board approved a one-year agreement with RMI International, Inc., beginning Oct. 1. The security officers will supplement Metro staff and state- certified law enforcement personnel.
Metro Board Chair John Fasana said the added security corresponds with the expansion of the transit system over the past 26 years.
“This action to enhance security is a critical step in ensuring our passengers have a safe and secure experience,” Fasana said.
Alex Wiggins, Metro’s chief securities official, said the boost to security staffing accommodates higher ridership and maintains overall safety for riders.
“Safety and security of our customers and our employees is Metro’s number one priority,” Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington said. “This is part of our overall strategic plan to maximize our visibility and resources across our system.”
The RMI contract is on top of other security upgrades implemented by Metro recently. Camera-mounted SkyWatch towers and security kiosks were placed at various rail stations throughout Metro’s system last year that allow surveillance feeds to be accessed by law enforcement using smartphone and tablet devices.
