The U.S. Open Championship golf tournament will return to Los Angeles for the first time since 1948, officials with the United States Golf Association announced today.

The fabled tournament will be played in 2023 at Los Angeles Country Club, 10101 Wilshire Blvd. The last time the tournament was played in the Los Angeles area, it was held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades — a tournament won by Ben Hogan.

“We’re in a for a real treat in 2023,” said USGA Executive Director Mike Davis. “It will be a wider U.S. Open — the course will have generous fairways, and it will be firm and fast. It’s going to give the players a lot of options. And it will be great to take the U.S. Open to the second-largest city in the country.

The U.S. Open was held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego in 2008, and it will return to that venue in 2021.

The 2023 event will be the fourth USGA championship held at the Los Angeles Country Club, which hosted the 1930 U.S. Women’s Amateur and the 1954 U.S. Junior Amateur. It will play host to the 2017 Walker Cup Match.

“The city loves to host major events,” club president John Chulick said. “This region, not having hosted the U.S. Open for so long, will be ecstatic about this.”

Mayor Eric Garcetti hailed the announcement.

“The U.S. Open is a proven winner, with a current economic impact of approximately $150 million and L.A. looks forward to welcoming golfers and spectators from around the world,” Garcetti said.
