The West Los Angeles Division of the Los Angeles Police Department is warning the public to be wary of a costly scam that’s taking place on the Westside.

Senior Lead Officer Maria Gray said the scam has been quite rampant and victims all over the U.S. have fallen prey, particularly in the immigrant and elderly community.

“There are people out there impersonating IRS agents,” Gray said. “They claim that the intended victim owes back taxes. They are then threatened that if they don’t pay them via a pre-loaded debit card the ‘agent’ will send an officer or sheriff to arrest them within an hour.”

Gray said another similar example was someone impersonating an officer claiming that the red light ticket they unknowingly received had gone to warrant and that they need to buy a money card (often referred to as a ‘green dot’ card) to satisfy the warrant after which they are to provide him with the verification number.

She said another example is someone claiming that they are being fined for failing to report to jury duty.

“None of these scenarios will ever legitimately happen,” Gray said.
