A 44-year-old man was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of using Instagram to locate the addresses of about 30 female college students he would allegedly steal personal effects from such as underwear.
Arturo Galvan, who was being held without bail, was charged last week with 33 counts of first-degree burglary, one count of attempted burglary, all felonies, and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and vandalism.
Many of the students lived in sorority-owned housing at Chapman and Cal State Fullerton universities, according to Roxi Fyad of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Galvan allegedly would use the locating information on Instagram posts to track down where the women lived and break in when they weren’t home to steal underwear, other types of clothes, personal photos, planners, jewelry, laptops and tablet devices, according to Fyad.
The burglaries began May 22 and continued through Dec. 3 when a Fullerton police officer interrupted the suspect as he was peeping into a window, Fyad said. Galvan was arrested later that day allegedly attempting to break into a car, Fyad said.
Galvan could face up to 50 years in prison if convicted at trial.
