Metro to offer free rides on New Year’s Eve

Metro will again offer free rides on buses and trains tomorrow night for New Year’s Eve, and provide all-night service on its rail lines and Orange and Silver bus lines.

The free fares will be in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday until 2 a.m. Thursday, according to Metro. After 2 a.m., regular fares take effect.

All-night service will be offered on the Red, Purple, Blue, Expo, Green and Gold rail lines, along with the Orange and Silver bus lines. Bus lines that normally offer late-night service will also continue to do so.

The rail lines and Orange Line will run every 20 minutes from 1 to 5 a.m. Thursday, while the Silver Line will run every 60 minutes from midnight to 4 a.m.

Metro officials noted that due to a Long Beach New Year’s Eve celebration, the Blue Line’s downtown Long Beach Station will be closed from 7 p.m. Wednesday until 3 a.m. Thursday. During the closure, Blue Line trains will run every 10 minutes between the Seventh Street/Metro Center station in downtown Los Angeles to the Willow Street Station, then every 20 minutes between Willow Street and the First Street Station in Long Beach. A shuttle train will also be offered every 20 minutes between the Anaheim Street and Pacific Avenue stations.

Transportation officials encouraged people planning to attend the New Year’s Eve party in downtown Los Angeles at Grand Park to take advantage of train service to avoid driving. Anyone showing a Metro TAP card at an event information booth will receive a free glow necklace.

Riders can take the Red or Purple line trains to the Civic Center/Grand Park station to access the event.

Metro also plans to offer more frequent service on the Metro Gold Line to accommodate people heading to the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game in Pasadena on Thursday. People heading to the parade can take the Gold Line to the Memorial Park, Del Mar, Lake or Allen stations. People heading to the game should disembark at the Memorial Park station, then walk west on Holly Street to the free Rose Bowl shuttle at the Parsons Engineering parking lot.

After the Rose Parade, people who want to view the floats on display at Victory Park in Pasadena on Thursday and Friday can take the Gold Line to the Sierra Madre Villa station, where a free shuttle will be provided to the park.
