Gunfire Incident at Westchester Park Leads to Arrest, Prompts Community Meeting

LAPD Pursues Suspect After Shots Fired, Councilmember Responds

An LAPD spokesperson confirmed that a disturbing incident took place at Westchester Park yesterday evening at about 7:03 p.m. The spokesperson stated that a call came in with reports of gunfire at Lincoln and Manchester. The LAPD responded to conduct a shooting investigation after approximately 15 shots were heard by witnesses. No injuries were reported.

Responding to the situation, LAPD officers arrived at the scene and initiated a pursuit of the suspect. The suspect discarded a rifle from the vehicle as they were attempting to escape. The police successfully apprehended the suspect on Kentwood Avenue, north of Firebrand Street. According to the LAPD spokesperson, no further information about the identity of the suspect or the incident is available.

City Councilmember of District 11, Traci Park, made a statement after the incident via social media: “I just met with the LAPD at Westchester Park and want to provide some updates for the surrounding community. Officers are actively investigating and canvassing the area. One suspect is already in custody; luckily, there are no reported injuries. As you all know, Westchester Park is home to our library and senior center, and my team and I work out of our office there every day, so this is extremely personal to me. I am profoundly grateful to the LAPD for the swift response and initial arrest. This violence is wholly unacceptable, and I will continue to work with the Westchester community to ensure the park is safe and accessible for everyone. I will provide further updates as information becomes available.”

Today, Traci Park’s office issued a second statement about a community meeting that will be held later this week, on Thursday, June 20: “Following last night’s incident at Westchester Park, we’re holding a joint meeting with LAPD this Thursday at 5:30 PM at the LAX Police Headquarters to discuss community safety concerns. The meeting will be held at 9160 Loyola Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90045. Your safety is our top priority. See you there!”
