International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach is in Los Angeles today to visit USC, UCLA and other proposed venues for the 2024 Olympic Games.
The Los Angeles 2024 bid committee announced last week that it wants to house athletes at UCLA, and a media village at USC. Bach is also visiting the Getty Center.
Bach will meet with Mayor Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson, LA 2024 Chair Casey Wasserman, vice chairs Janet Evans and Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, and United States Olympic Committee officials.
Bach began his visit to Los Angeles on Sunday by attending a Lakers basketball game at Staples Center, one of the potential venues, and will travel to San Francisco tomorrow to meet with tech company executives, according to LA 2024 officials.
Los Angeles is competing against Paris, Budapest, Rome and Hamburg for the opportunity to host the 2024 Games. The first set of candidature packages laying out the cities’ bid concepts and strategies are due later this month.
The two-year bid process also includes two additional stages in which candidate cities need to show they will fund and deliver the Games. The IOC is expected to pick a city in 2017.
