Marqueece Harris-Dawson will be sworn in today as the new councilman for the 8th Council District during a City Hall ceremony that will be attended by Mayor Eric Garcetti and other top city and county officials.
Harris-Dawson is a former executive director of Community Coalition, a nonprofit organization founded by Rep. Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles, in an attempt to improve economic conditions in South L.A. He defeated three other candidates in March to replace termed-out Councilman Bernard Parks and represent the South Los Angeles district.
Also confirmed to attend the ceremony is county Supervisor Mark Ridley- Thomas and Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson.
“I plan to bring respect for the 8th District back to City Hall,” Harris-Dawson said. “My top priority is to create a council office that is responsive to residents and serves as a vehicle for community engagement.”
Harris-Dawson said he will begin a listening tour on July 15.
“I want to restore residents’ faith in city government by addressing basic needs in local neighborhoods that have been neglected for years.” he said. “I look forward to getting to work.”
