Meet Century City: Michele Havens, Northern Trust

Michele Havens.
Michele Havens.

After witnessing her own family struggle with understanding financial affairs, Michele Havens decided to master the field of financial services and serves the community at Northern Trust as President of the Los Angeles Region.

What do you do in Century City?

Northern Trust is a premier global wealth management firm founded in 1889. We offer objective, expert advice backed by comprehensive financial capabilities and delivered with the highest level of service and integrity. As Region President of Los Angeles for Northern Trust, I am responsible for managing the investment management, trust and estate planning, private and business banking and financial consulting business.

What motivated you to get into this role?

I have been with Northern Trust for 15 years and have spent my entire career in financial services. When offered a new and challenging position or assignment I take it. A confident leader will not hesitate to seek advice from those more expert in an area affecting the enterprise. Building a foundation of trust and teamwork is imperative. I have strong relationships throughout my organization across all levels and don’t hesitate to ask for advice. The team we have built is world class.

Where did it all begin for you career-wise?

As a girl I saw my parents struggle with a lack of knowledge regarding financial affairs. I knew in sixth grade that I had to invest in figuring it out and demystify the complexity of our business for other families.

What do you love about Century City? Where is your favorite place to eat/exercise/take a break from the office in the area?

Breeze at the Hyatt is my favorite place to eat. The professional staff are friendly and attentive. The Century Plaza courtyard is a vibrant with many great options for more casual meetings.

If you could add one component to the neighborhood, what would it be and why?

Westfield is bringing Nordstrom to Century City and that rounds out the retail experience for me. A yoga/barre studio would be a welcome addition for early morning work outs close to the office.

What do you do in your spare time?

Family is my focus outside of the office. I’m blessed to have an incredibly supportive husband and two wonderful children. We enjoy the theater, beach and various restaurants that L.A. has to offer. Keeping physically fit is a personal priority. I aspire to continue to reduce my golf handicap too.

What is one cool/unique activity you want to do this coming year?

A hot air balloon ride remains on my bucket list.

Where was your last vacation?

We were in Maui last week and enjoyed snorkeling, surfing, and whale watching.

Where do you wish your last vacation was?

I’m always looking forward. An African Family Safari is on the top of my list to do in the next three years when my two children are a bit older. I’m a member of Young President’s Organization (YPO) and they have an extraordinary experience that is their longest running YPO family event.
