“Chappie” opened in the number one spot at the North American box offices this weekend, with a $13.3 million total.
The action thriller, about robot police, is from Sony.
“Focus” was in second place, with $10 million in sales.
“The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” opened in third place, as Richard Gere joined the cast for the sequel. It was on track for an $8.6 million weekend, according to studio estimates gathered by Rentrak.
Rounding out the top 10 movies in the U.S. and Canada were “Kingsman: The Secret Service” ($8.3 million), “Spongebob Squarepants 2” ($7 million), “Fifty Shades Of Grey” ($5.6 million), “McFarland, USA” ($5.3 million), “The Lazarus Effect” ($5.1 million), “The DUFF” ($4.9 million) and “Unfinished Business” (opening with $4.8 million).
