One Direction and Iggy Azalea win big at American Music Awards

Boy band One Direction and Australian hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea were the big stars at Sunday night’s 2014 American Music Awards, held at the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live.

Britain-based One Direction grabbed three awards — artist of the year, favorite pop/rock band/duo/group and favorite pop/rock album.

Azalea — whose collaboration with singer Charli XCX on the song “Fancy” was one of the year’s biggest hits — had a fancy evening of her own, winning favorite rap/hip-hop artist and favorite rap/hip-hop artist.

Azalea went into the AMA ceremony with a leading six nominations — the two she won and artist of the year, new artist of the year, single of the year and favorite female pop/rock artist.

John Legend, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams each had five award nominations.

Pop/country star Taylor Swift headlined an impressive list of artists who performed during the show. They included country legend Garth Brooks, Selena Gomez, Imagine Dragons, Fergie, Lorde and Sam Smith.

Swift also received the inaugural Dick Clark Award for Excellence, recognizing her as the only artist in history to have three albums — “Speak Now,” “Red” and “1989” — sell more than 1 million copies in their first week on the market.

Swift opened the show by performing her new single, “Blank Space.”

The AMAs, televised on ABC, were hosted by rapper Pitbull.
