One person was seriously injured this morning and had to be cut from their vehicle after a collision on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway near downtown that temporarily shut down four lanes and an onramp, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The multi-vehicle crash took place on the eastbound 10 Freeway, just west of Central Avenue, shortly after midnight, CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos said.
The collision involved two pickup trucks and a SUV, according to the CHP.
One of the trucks, a red pickup, apparently fled the scene and CHP officers were looking for its driver, Villalobos said. It’s unclear what, if any, role the red truck had in the accident, he said.
One person had to be cut out of their vehicle by city firefighters. That person was transported to a hospital for treatment, Villalobos said. There was no word on that person’s condition. No other victims were immediately reported.
The CHP shut down the Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 lanes of the eastbound 10 Freeway and the San Pedro onramp to the 10, he said. A SigAlert was declared at 12:21 am.
The lanes were finally cleared at about 1:15 am.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation, he said.
