Attorney General Kamala Harris announced the creation today of a Los Angeles-based task force targeting methamphetamine makers.
With $1 million in federal funding, six state Department of Justice agents will work with other DOJ units, including the Los Angeles Interagency Metropolitan Police Apprehension Crime Task Force, which spearheaded a crackdown on money-laundering suspects in downtown’s Fashion District in September.
“Transnational criminal organizations have made California the largest point of entry for methamphetamine into the United States,” Harris said. “This funding supports the California Department of Justice’s crackdown on this devastating drug by strengthening our enforcement capabilities.”
The state DOJ is in charge of 18 task forces across the state, including the L.A. interagency unit, which draws from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and investigates mid- to major-level drug trafficking groups.
During the Sept. 10 sweep of the Fashion District, federal agents seized more than $90 million in cash boxes, duffel bags, backpacks and even in the trunk of a Bentley.
