A Los Angeles police commissioner’s smartphone damaged by pop singer Rihanna netted a $66,500 winning bid on eBay on May 15.
The bidding on the iPhone, which belongs to Police Commission president Steve Soboroff, ended a little past noon.
The money will go to the Los Angeles Police Foundation which will use it to help a police cadet program enroll “under-served kids,” and to the Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation to assist the families of fallen officers, according to Soboroff.
Rihanna dropped and cracked the phone while attempting to take a “selfie” with Soboroff at the May 10 playoff game between Los Angeles Clippers and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The artist the next day signed the back of the phone with the words “Sorry! I (love) LAPD. Rihanna.”
She also donated $25,000 to the police foundation, according to Soboroff.
An anonymous donor put in another $25,000, Soboroff said, bringing the total amount going toward the two causes to $116,500.
