Statement by Tina Hess

Tina Hess
I am running for Council District 11 because I am the best qualified candidate to represent the residents of the District. I’ve spent 25 years as a prosecutor in the City Attorney’s Office. I know how the City works. I know how to make it work better. I have a plan to make city government work SMARTer for the Westside.

As a longtime homeowner, I know what our community has to offer. From its beaches to its mountains, from LAX to the Palisades, District 11 offers the best of Southern California. It is paramount that we do everything possible to preserve its natural habitats, its commerce and its quality of life.

Our district faces many tough issues that affect the quality of life of every resident. We know that city services have been reduced, maintenance deferred, and emergency response time increased. We have watched as homeless camps proliferate unchecked, poorly planned developments expand without appropriate neighbor participation, the spread of illegal signs blight our neighborhoods, and gridlock become intolerable!

I know that City Hall “politics as usual†has taken a toll on our community and how the deteriorating infrastructure takes a toll on our neighborhoods.

I believe now, more than ever, we must bring a new perspective to our government.

As a prosecutor for the past 25 years, I have dedicated my career to improving the quality of life for Angelenos throughout the City. I have the experience and proven track record of taking on the special interests that threaten to corrupt our city and destroy our neighborhoods. My work in the City Attorney’s Office has equipped me with the skills necessary to deal the most entrenched and toughest problems that we face.

I currently serve as the Deputy Chief of the Complex and Special Litigation Division. I have cases pending against banks for failing to maintain their foreclosed properties; against insurance companies for illegal rescissions targeting women with breast cancer; and, against billboard companies for illegal billboards and supergraphics. I also supervise the Environmental Justice Unit and Consumer Protection Units. I have also supervised the Neighborhood Prosecutor Program, the Citywide Nuisance Abatement Program, the Problem Property Resolution Team, the Slum Housing Task Force, and other programs dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of life for residents of the City.

For too long, City Council has failed to represent the needs of residents and protect our communities from special interests. As long as we continue to vote for those entrenched in the downtown and Sacramento political machines, we will never achieve real reform that we need at City Hall.

I am the only candidate who has both the experience and proven track record of standing up for our City. I’m ready to get to work serving the real special interests of our district: the residents. As your next councilwoman, I will work with the LAPD and LAFD to ensure adequate funding for necessary enforcement, emergency preparedness and better response times. I won’t allow special interests to ravage the natural beauty of our communities and the environment. I won’t allow these same special interests to push through developments that lack proper planning to mitigate the negative burden that gets dumped on the residents.

It’s time to break away from the status quo and elect a candidate from outside the downtown political machine. A candidate who has the experience and integrity to take on the tough challenges that lie ahead.
