The Brentwood Community Council awarded the Brentwood Youth Citizen Awards. Participating schools include St. Martin of Tours, Archer School for Girls, Brentwood School, University High School, Paul Revere Middle School and Palisades Charter High School.
Winners included: Girl Scout Troop 10645, St. Martin of Tours for renovating the kitchen facilities at St. Turbius School in Los Angeles; Jose Ernesto Lopez, Uni High for 716 hours of volunteer work with children; Natalie Cardenas, Brentwood School for 800 volunteer hours; Annie Krepack, Archer School for her volunteer work in community organizations; Abdiel Lopez, Pali High for human rights activism on behalf of the Latino community; and Dora Seggelke, 7th grader, Paul Revere Middle School who organizes clothing drives for needy children. Congratulations!
Ellen Isaacs, Field Deputy for Michael Feuer, appeared on his behalf for the last time. Assemblyman Feuer was in the hospital following a car accident. Our new assemblyman is the former Mayor of Santa Monica, Richard Bloom.
Los Angeles Airport Commissioner Ann Hollister and Specific Plan Amendment Study Project (SPAS) Director Diego Alvarez updated the BCC on airport renovations. These renovations are projected for completion in 2025. Terminal 6 will be open summer of 2013. See www.lawa.org/LAXSPAS/
Larry Watts introduced a bylaw amendment regarding abstention votes.
Nancy Freedman reported on Budget Day at the Mayor’s office downtown.
Ray Klein reported that Archer School for Girls has filed a CUP for expanded facilities; Hans Rockenwagner has filed a Conditional User Permit, or CUP, for a restaurant in the building under construction on the northeast corner of Barrington and Wilshire. The BCC voted unanimously to have the land use committee draft conditions subject to executive approval prior to the December 19 hearing.
Martin Cadillac has proposed a major expansion at the location on the corner of Bundy and Olympic.
Frederick Sutton, candidate for the 11th District City Council seat being vacated by Councilman Bill Rosendahl, addressed the BCC. Sutton’s pitch included references to the city’s unfunded mandates, adding a traffic engineer dedicated to District 11, more public-private partnerships and a pledge to donate 20 percent of his salary to fix the sidewalks in the district.
Teri Redmond updated the BCC on the coral trees. She met with the Urban Forestry Division of the City of Los Angeles about a new irrigation system. It was denied because of the extensive shallow root system of these trees. The department is working with her to source replacement trees for ones that have fallen and to adjust sod and sprinklers.
The Sunset Safety Committee will be placing banners on Sunset soon to encourage safe driving.
There will be no meeting in January; it is a holiday.
