Editor’s Note: Here’s a Q&A with Evan Fieldman, founder of AfterSchool.me.
Q: Evan, what is “AfterSchool.me†? How does it work?
A: Afterschool.me is a web based startup that inspires kids outside the classroom. Our website helps parents find the best activities for their kids in sports, arts and technology. We showcase not just programs, like YMCA or Little Leagues, but the actual activities at each of these programs. Parents search for activities on our website based on location, age, schedules and reviews. If they love a class for their kid, they can share with friends on Facebook and Twitter.
It’s a huge resource for parents – and it’s free!
Q: There are so many new startups these days, it boggles the mind. What will you do to “stand out from the crowd†?
A: First, Afterschool.me solves a real problem. Currently, parents of more than 18 million kids are actively searching for activities.
Parents are spending on average, $2,400 and they are demanding a way to find the right activities at the right price. Second, we are focusing on the user experience by meeting with as many parents as possible to build the best product. Finally, we have built a dynamic technology platform that completely transforms the extracurricular space, which we build, hard to replicate.
Q: So, how’s it going so far?
A: We launched locally here in LA this summer and our momentum is overwhelming! We currently feature over 1,200 activities for 125 franchises, non profits and rec centers. Parents and programs alike love our product and our user basis is growing organically. We were selected as one of Fortune’s Startup Idols, and already received funding from Start Engine, an LA based investment fund.
Q: We understand there’s a lot of “Brentwood†in this story. Tell us about that.
A: The Brentwood community was essential to our product development. Parents in Brentwood are tech savvy, care deeply about their children and expect only the best for products. My first meetings with parents were at New York Bagel and Coral Tree Cafe, and we often shared designs and new features with patrons along San Vicente, who provided valuable and candid insight. Brentwood support from businesses and parents helped evolve an idea into a real product that will inspire kids across the country.
