The J. Paul Getty Trust welcomes two new officers. In August, James Cuno took over as head of the J. Paul Getty Trust after serving as president and Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute of Chicago. His distinguished career includes Director and Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London 2003-4; Harvard University Art Museum 1991-2003; Hood Museum of Art Dartmouth College 1989-91; Grunwald Center for Graphic Arts UCLA 1986-89; and assistant professor of art at Vassar College 1983-1986.
A prolific author and lecturer on museums and cultural policy, Dr. Cuno’s latest book Museums Matter: in Praise of the Encyclopedic Museum was released last fall. He replaces James N. Wood, who died at his Brentwood home unexpectedly in June of 2010.
Last month, Dr. Cuno named Dr. Timothy Potts to be the new Director of the J. Paul Getty Museum, a position he will assume September 1. Potts, the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England since 2008, was the Director of the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas from 1998-2007 and Director of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia before that.
Potts studied at Sydney University and Oxford and specializes in ancient art. He is a native of Australia and has conducted archaeological expeditions in Jordan, Iraq and Greece.
