Everyone agrees: those fundraisers for KCRW and KCET are awfully annoying.
Instead of listening to music or commentary while we drive – or watching a show we want to see – we get pitched by someone standing in front of a phone bank, telling us to “call now†to make our annual pledge.
So I must sound equally annoying when I keep asking people to become “Brentwood Boosters,†which helps keep the Brentwood News coming.
Sorry. But it seems to be working; just about every other day or so an envelope arrives with $39 in it. One day we got a check for $100; another day we got a check for $250!
Some of the people who have sent in a contribution I know well. Other days we get contributions from people I don’t know at all, but they send the kindest notes telling us how much they appreciate the Brentwood News.
Thank you, friends.
Your contributions make a huge difference. Local merchants, real estate agents and other professionals are doing their best in a tough economy and simply can’t advertise the way they used to. The Brentwood Boosters definitely help keep us going.
We are approaching 50 “boosters†so far; in a town with 18,000 households and 32,000 residents, I’d sure like to see this number climb to 1,000 – or more. Now that would surely ensure our survival.
So become a Brentwood Booster! See the little notice on the lower right-hand side of this page to learn how.
Another thing you can do to help your community paper: send us your stories, directly. We don’t have the editorial staff we once did. Think of this as a “community bulletin board†to which you are invited to pin items.
For example, this month we got a great story from Jerry Adomian of Brentwood Hills, all about this neighborhood’s annual party and Marcus Mitchell, a postal worker who is retiring after 45 years (see pages 28 and 29). Perfect!
“Citizen journalism,†or “user generated content†is the in thing. So send your items to editor@brentwoodnewsonline.com.
Enough begging. Now let’s flip this around and have some fun with this.
If you are a Brentwood Booster or Brentwood News advertiser, you are hereby invited to a housewarming party we’ll be throwing Thursday, Nov. 4, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.. One of our supporters is offering her lovely house for the occasion.
If you are a Brentwood Booster, you get in free; if not, we’ll sign you up that night – or charge you $10 to get in.
If you want to attend, please send an email saying “yes, I’d like to attend†to suzanne@brentwoodnewsonline.com, or call 310-476-6397.
Suzanne Black runs our Brentwood Booster club. She has been with the Brentwood News almost from the very beginning. Everyone who knows her loves her.
Once Suzanne hears from you, she’ll send you all the particulars about the location. Come as you are!
I always like November; that’s when we started the Brentwood News back in 1991. It’s also my birthday. November also means Thanksgiving, so it’s only proper that the Brentwood News thank the Brentwood Boosters and our advertisers.
Hope to see you November 4th!
