Culver City Council to Review Parking Rates, Proclaims May Heritage Months

Gender-Neutral Restrooms Ordinance and City Proclamations Announced

On Monday, the City Council of Culver City unanimously agreed to revisit new parking meter rates. Following a proposal to increase certain parking meters from 25 cents per hour to $1 per hour, the council requested additional stakeholder outreach and will revisit the issue in three months.

The proposal included changes for nearly 740 meters in industrial areas, potentially generating an additional $100,000 per month. Current rates in the Downtown District and parks remain unchanged. The city also continues to explore reducing 10-hour parking spaces to 2-hour limits to increase turnover.

Additionally, a pay-by-app pilot program has been introduced with over 30 meters in Downtown Culver City, with further data collection and review planned.

The City Council also heard public input on a new ordinance requiring gender-neutral restrooms in newly constructed buildings. Existing buildings can voluntarily retrofit their facilities. The ordinance mandates signage indicating accessibility for all users and includes 11 design elements to ensure security and privacy.

City Council Proclamations for May

The council made several proclamations, including:

  • Jewish American Heritage Month: Celebrating the contributions and heritage of Jewish Americans in Culver City.
  • Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month: Highlighting the theme “Advancing Leaders Through Innovation” and the significant contributions of AANHPI individuals.
  • Historic Preservation Month: Recognizing efforts to preserve local history under the theme “People Saving Places.”
  • National Cities, Towns, and Villages Month: Celebrating local governments and the National League of Cities’ centennial anniversary.
  • National Bike Month: Encouraging bicycling for transportation and exercise, supported by various local initiatives and events.

  • Approval of cash disbursements from April 20 to May 3, 2024.
  • Adoption of an amended section of the 2022 California Building Standards Code.
  • Approval of sidewalk repair projects in specific neighborhoods is estimated to cost $162,000.
  • A five-year lease agreement with the Culver City Historical Society.
  • Approval of decorative lighting installation in Downtown Culver City by the Downtown Business Association.
  • Amendment to increase the tree maintenance services agreement with West Coast Arborists, Inc. by $175,000.
  • Receipt of the City Manager’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2024-2025, with a public hearing scheduled for June 10.
